Immigration Minister David Coleman has flagged a revamp of regional visas, saying some areas are virtually begging for more migrants.

There are several visas available to migrants to fill skills shortages in rural and regional Australia.

Department of Home Affairs figures show almost 11,000 places were awarded under the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme in the 2016/17 financial year.

Speaking to S-B-S Radio's Punjabi program, Mr Coleman says he is looking at how the current system can be improved.
