If you have overseas qualification and experience it is not easy to enter the Australian legal profession. Australian legal practitioner Nurul I Khan explains how to enter into the Australian legal profession.

Admission requirements are same in Victoria and New South Wales which covers three-quarter of lawyers in Australia.

In other states, each state has its own regulations.

"There are three things that need to be satisfied before applying for becoming a legal practitioner in Australia if you have overseas qualification and experience", says Nurul I Khan, a legal practitioner and managing partner of SR Lawyer in Victoria.

"At first your professional degree will be assessed and if you have prior experience that will be assessed too. And then you will be asked to do some individual units depending on assessment result by the regulatory authority. Thirdly, you will have to fulfil the required proficiency in the English language."

To bypass English requirements, you will need to complete a Bachelor of Law degree in Australia.
