Esther Deng is the mother of the twin who is challenging her generation in agriculture with her 4 hectares farm, which she used to plant onions.

  • Young South Sudanese farming in Kenya
  • The mother of two works to support her family
  • Esther is the first young South Sudanese to farm in Kenya.

Esther Deng was born in South Sudan and moved to Kenya when she was just two years old. She lived in Kakuma Refugee Camp and eventually ended up in Eldoret, where she completed her year 12.

She became a mother, which shifted her idea because she needed to do more for her children. Esther started her grocery shop before leasing land in central Kenya to cultivate her first farm. Esther leased 4 hectares of land in Laikipia, Kenya, and the success of her farm can be seen as she is moving to her third harvest of red onions. We interview Ester while in Kenya.
