It was back in 2019 during an interview that Nia Vardalos had first stated she was considering making a third sequel for the rom-com classic.

The Greek Canadian actress has now officially confirmed the movie is in the works.

Vardalos, 58, broke took to Instagram this week to break the news by way of ‘clearing up a rumor’ as she put it.

In her video post she admitted humorously that “the news leaked because one Greek found out”!
"Yes, it is true that for over a year we have been trying to film a script that I wrote called 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,'" Vardalos said.

But she went on explaining that shootings have not yet started due to the difficulty of securing insurance as an independent film.

The video does end on a positive note, with Vardalos exclaiming first in Greek and then in English:

"When we get film insurance, we are going to Greece to film!"

The groundbreaking film started as a one-woman theatre show before Tom Hanks and his Greek-American wife Rita Wilson picked it up and helped her turn it into a movie.
