Diplomat George Papakostas is the new ambassador to Canberra

Greek diplomat Mr George Papakostas is Greece’s next ambassador to Canberra, replacing Ms Ekaterini Xagorari.


Ms Xagorari, after a tenure of almost four years in Canberra, departs tomorrow (Wed) for Athens and then to Nicosia where she will head Greece’s embassy in Cyprus.

Australian foreign ministry approved today (Tuesday) the appointment of Mr Papakostas who is expected to arrive in the coming months.

Currently he is the ambassador at Kinshasa (People Republic of Congo).

Mr Papakostas was on 13 August 1965 in Athens. He joined the Greek diplomatic service in 1992. He is a holder of Law Degree, from the University of Athens. Apart from greek, he speaks English and French.

Mr Papakostas has been posted to the Embassies of Greece in Slovenia, Sweden, Armenia and the Permanent Mission of Greece to the European Union, Brussels (source: Greek MFA).
