A looming "economic crisis" could ultimately prove worse than coronavirus deaths in Australia, Deputy Premier John Barilaro said.

"We're in the middle of a health crisis but what is looming is bigger, an economic crisis," he said, briefing reporters about the fight to open borders for NSW farmers".

"Not many politicians want to stand here in front of a camera and say that ... while we deal with the many deaths of the COVID pandemic my fear is the number of deaths that will come from the economic crisis", he said.
