Queen’s birthday: Australia honours Greek Australians

At least six Greek-Australians are included in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List.


In total there are about 900 Australians who receive awards in the general division and more than 200 are receiving meritorious and military awards.

.Using as a basic criterion the Greek surname, this year we find the following Australians of Greek origins receiving an award.

In the category Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia there are:

Mr Charalambos Andrea VATILIOTIS, NSW, for significant service to musical instrument making as a luthier.

In the category Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division, there are:

Mr Dimitrios ALEXOPOULOS, Victoria for service to the Greek community of Victoria.

Mr Stefanos CHRISTOFIS, Nightcliff Northern Territory  for service to the Greek Orthodox community of Darwin.

Ms Angela Lyris, from Sydney for service to education.

Ms Philia Angela POLITES, from Murrumba Downs QLD,  for service to people with a disability, and to the community.

Mr George PETROU, from Mont Albert Victoria, for service to the visual arts, and to veterans

In the recipients’ list we also find MrsJeanette Miller ANICTOMATIS, from Northern Territory. She is being honoured for significant service to the people of the Northern Territory through representational roles, and to youth through Guides.. She is Spouse of The Hon John Anictomatis AO, Administrator of the Northern Territory, 2000-2003.
