"The letter", a short story by Napoleon Lapathiotis, is about lost possibilities, unrequited love and the people who come to our lives only for a moment.

The letter she found in the pocket of an old dress had no name. A young man was confessing his love for her.  The letter was addressed to her, for that she had no doubt. But who was he? And why did he keep his feeling so secret that even now she cannot guess who that person was. What it could have happened if she had found the letter earlier? It was hiding in the pocket of her gown for decades. She had worn that gown once, in that masquerade party when she was only 18 years old.
