Five members of an Australian family have died in a horrific road accident in India on Sunday. an Australian family, including two children, have died in a horrific accident on a freeway in India on Sunday.
Rupendra Dutta was travelling to Agra with his wife - Anamika Dutta (45), his two daughters - Pipasa (15), Neetika (12) and his son Tirvijai (20) along with his two other family members when the wheel of their car burst along the Yamuna Expressway in Uttar Pradesh.
The car, due to tyre burst, went out of control and dashed into a safety barrier, then a road divider, flipping upside down and landing on the opposite side of the expressway.
Residents of a nearby village tried to help the family, but the two women and two girls died at the scene. Tirvijai was taken to Mathura Hospital where he died a short time later, police said.
Rupendra Dutta, Anamika's husband and father of the three children is still in the hospital.
His father-in-law, N K Paliwal, and the driver of the SUV were also admitted to hospital and were being treated for injuries sustained in the crash.
Rupendra Dutta, originally from Delhi, runs a restaurant in Adelaide and was holidaying with his family in India at the time of the accident.
Police spokesperson Narendar Singh told Indian newspaper The Times of India that the accident took place around 3.30pm "due to a tyre burst".
The Department of Foreign Affairs at Trade confirmed the deaths on Monday night, local time.
"[DFAT] is providing consular assistance in accordance with the Consular Services Charter to members of a family of Australians who passed away following a traffic accident in Uttar Pradesh, India," a spokeswoman said in a statement.
UPDATE AS OF 14TH JANUARY
Sixth member of this family has died after he heard about the deaths of his family member.
Rupen Dutta, the restaurant owner from Adelaide, lost 5 members of his family, including wife and his three children as well as his sister-in-law in a road accident.
News has just come in that the sixth member, Rupen Dutta's father-in-law NK Paliwal, who too was travelling with them, died from a heart attack, after hearing about the death of his two daughters and three grand-children.
Rupen Dutta remains in the hospital and is undergoing treatment.
