In Australia, the day was celebrated with almost 40 iconic buildings lit up with a digital projection of the Indian flag.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) said: "In celebration of the Australia-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the 75th anniversary of India’s independence, Australia’s national monuments around the country will be illuminated in the colours of India’s national flag."
The Canberra-based Indian High Commission also told SBS Hindi that arrangement was an initiative of the Australian government itself, which then worked with state governments, city mayors and councils to identify the buildings and monuments.
It was heartening for us to see the list grow steadily. We believe this is the first time that so many monuments have together been illuminated in Australia with the Indian tricolour.Indian High Commission, Canberra
"Illumination of iconic monuments in the Indian tricolour by Australia symbolises the deepening friendship and people to people bonds between India and Australia," the Indian High Commission said.
This warm gesture has been well received not only by India but also by the wonderful Indian-Australian community that takes pride in both identities and straddles both cultures.Indian High Commission, Canberra
