Mangoes from India have arrived on Australian shores for the first time ever.

reports around 400 trays of inaugural consignment will arrive in markets in Sydney this week and the second consignment will arrive in markets in Perth next week.

The first consignment contains kesar variety and dubbed as the ‘king of mangoes’, ‘Alphonso’ variety will reach Australia in coming few weeks.

Perfection Fresh Australia’s Chief Executive Michael Simonetta, who took the delivery of the mangoes, told ABC, “"The fruit had a little bit of blemish on the skin and wasn't as evenly coloured as we expected it to be, so we're in the process now of getting it to colour more evenly and then offer it for sale following that. The eating quality is quite nice. It's pleasant to eat.”

The rule around importing Indian mangoes was revised in April which meant that traders would be able to import the Indian fruit as long as it had been treated with irradiation prior to export.

Indian Australians rejoiced at the announcement. Hasibah Keriwala wrote, “Lovely, cant wait” while another SBS Hindi follower said, “I will get a box.”
