Indian-origin educationist Asha Khemka named ‘Asian Businesswoman of the Year’

Indian-origin Dame Asha Khemka, who arrived in the United Kingdom with her family in 1978 was named “Asian Businesswoman of the Year” at an event in Birmingham.

Indian-origin Dame Asha Khemka, who arrived in the United Kingdom with her family in 1978 was named “Asian Businesswoman of the Year” at an event in Birmingham.

Asha Khemka was awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2008.

Later, she was appointed a Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2014 New Year’s Honours List - UK’s top civilian awards.

Asha was the first Indian-born woman for 83 years to be awarded the DBE.

Dame is the female equivalent of knighthood and has since won several awards for her work in education in Nottingham.

She has received accolades such as ‘Asian Women of Achievement’, ‘National Jewel Award,’ ‘Business Women of the Midlands’ and ‘Inspirational Women of the Year.’

“Asian Businesswoman of the Year” award was conferred on her at the .

This honours the success and achievements of local Asian businesses.

The British Asian community is thriving and these awards have celebrated the innovative and forward thinking Asian businessmen and women in areas such as entrepreneurship, healthcare and manufacturing.”

Asha Khemka was born in Sitamarhi, a small town in the state of Bihar in India.

She got married at the age of 15 and came to the UK in 1978 with her husband Shankar who is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon.

Through her dedication and determination, Asha contributed to further education in UK.
