A young Italian street artist has paid homage to Italian mayor Mimmo Lucano with a mural in Melbourne.

Italian street artist Smoe is originally from the Calabria region. He has recently arrived in Australia and has been struck but the richness of the local street art and the openness towards his projects.

Despite being a new comer, he has been given the opportunity to paint a homage to Italian mayor Mimmo Lucano, who has recently been detained over his alleged involvement in organising "marriages of convenience" for immigration purposes.

But for Smoe Lucano is a symbol of a different, more humane approach to migration.
