Prime Minister Scott Morrison says granting an exception for a Tamil family whose refugee claims have been rejected would be an invitation to people smugglers to restart their trade.

The government's attempt to deport the family of four, including two children born in Australia, sparked protests on the weekend, but Mr Morrison said the government would not be swayed.
