O primeiro-ministro da Austrália prometeu devolver mais fundos do ICM/GST para o estado da Austrália Ocidental, que contribui muito mas recebe pouco de volta.


O estado minerador do país recebeu uma quantia muito baixa de volta, de 30 centavos, de cada dólar arrecadado pelo próprio estado, enquanto os estados de Nova Gales do Sul e Vitória receberam mais de um dólar para cada dólar que arrecadaram aos cofres federais.

Malcolm Turnbull disse que a fórmula de distribuição dos recursos arrecadados deve ser justa para todos os australianos:

"Setting a floor belong which a state's share of the GST cannot fall immediately after it has been exceeded in this cycle, means that no other state will be disadvantaged based on their projected GST shares."

O premiê do estado da Austrália Ocidental, Colin Barnett, ficou feliz com o anúncio, após 8 anos fazendo campanha por esta mudança:

"Yes, I'm delighted. I am delighted. That is a strong commitment to fixing up the GST issue for Western Australia. You know the figure (for the price floor )is yet to be determined. I have always said 75 cents, but it is not going to 40 or 50 cents. But it's going to be a floor at a level that makes it strong for Western Australia in terms of handling our budget, and being commit to into the infrastructure for a growing state."
