For Mandeep Singh, a young immigrant from Punjab, becoming an Australian was a delightful experience.

When Mandeep left India on a student visa, he wasn’t sure what the destiny had for him.

After nine years of constant struggle down the track, now he calls Australia his home.

Mandeep was part of a group of more than 50 immigrants who received their Australian citizenship as part of the Australia Day Festival at Melbourne.

“It’s good to be here to witness the Citizenship ceremony on the Australia Day," said Mandeep in a conversion with SBS Punjabi's

Talking to SBS Punjabi, after receiving citizenship, Mr Singh reflected on "what it means to him to be an Australian citizen".

“January 26 is a special date and becoming an Australian on this day is a delightful experience.

"I understand its value as it has come with a lot of responsibility.”

“It gives me both a sense of pride and comfort."

“Australia is a wonderful place to live, a lot better than any other country.”

“Everything is better here; let it be job opportunities, infrastructure, economy and living standard.”

“The most important thing is that this country embraces you with open arms. And you feel free to express yourself.”

Earlier in the day, Melbourne hosted a parade through the CBD, which was attended by over 100 community and cultural groups.
