So, what are the differences? According to CNN News 18, there are as many as 5 defects in the Indian Rs 500 note.
- National emblem – In one of the notes, the image of national emblem of India is placed on a grey strip that runs on one side of the note. In the other version, the emblem is misplaced and a part of it comes out on the blank space in the note.
- Security strip – In one Rs 500 note, the security strip runs next to the Gandhi image and the letters “Reserve Bank of India” are written on the right side of the trip in the top right hand corner. On the other note, however, the “R” of the Reserve Bank of India overlaps or smudges the security strip at the top. Reserve Bank of India calls it a variant.
- Mahatma Gandhi image – In one version of the note, there is an outline around the face of Gandhi, and in the other note, there is almost a shadow around the image’s face. Apparently, RBI admits that it’s a defect as they were printing notes in a hurry.
- Numbering of the notes - The numbering on the notes is different as well. On one version, the first two numbers of the series are on the printed area and the rest on the blank space. But in the second version, the numbers have shifted more towards the printed area.
- Colour of the note – In one version, the colour of the note has a dark green tinge to it. However, the other version is of a lighter colour.
According to RBI these are two variants of Rs 500 note in India and they both are valid. But RBI advises that if anyone finds the notes defective, they should go to RBI and get them changed.
