Sepsis is an immune response to infection which damages the body's tissue and organs. World Sepsis Day is September 13 and we spoke to Professor Naomi Hammond, Program Head of Sepsis Australia.


Sepsis affects around 55,000 Australians every year, with around 8,700 dying from it.

The risk of death from sepsis increases by 8% every hour it is left untreated.

The warning is, when it gets to be time-critical, emergency treatment is necessary to save lives.
