This week marks the National Asbestos Awareness Week (25 November – 1 December 2024), and the Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency (ASSEA) is calling for greater awareness about the dangers of ageing and deteriorating asbestos, particularly as home renovation projects begin. Tragically, asbestos-related diseases claim the lives of around 4,000 Australians every year. To help shed light on this pressing issue, we’re speaking with MR Mathew Werfel, the Assistant Director of ASSEA, to discuss the risks of asbestos exposure, the importance of awareness, and the steps homeowners should take to protect themselves during renovations.
