Ganesha Chaturthi, a Hindu festival is celebrated on the 31st of August this year. During this festival, idols of Lord Ganesha (also referred as Ganapathy, Vinayagar and Pillaiyar) are taken in a procession and worshipers dissolve them in a body of water, mostly the sea.

This practice could pose a risk of harm to marine life.

Pramila Shanmuga Ganesan has been handcrafting biodegradable Ganesha idols for some time.

Kulasegaram Sanchayan brings the story on Pramila Shanmuga Ganesan, who is creating Lord Ganesha idols with Australian environment in mind.
