Highest Awards given by the Government of India was announced recently. Of the 128 recipients this year, one is a “Sathir” dancer Shri Muthukannamal. Even at the age of 82, she wants to continue teaching “Sathir” one of the dance forms of India with a long history.


The art form “Sathir” has been modified about 70 years ago and re-branded as Bharatha Natyam.  Both art forms are considered classical dances of India.

Kulasegaram Sanchayan talks to Viralimalai Muthukannamal about her art form and its future.
