Australian air strikes against Islamic State targets in Syria will resume after a temporary suspension.

They were halted as a precautionary measure after a US fighter jet shot down a Syrian warplane and Russia warned it would treat all US coalition aircraft west of the Euphrates River in Syria as "airborne targets" as a result.

Defence on Thursday announced the suspension has since been lifted.
