At least eight people are dead, including a gunman, after a shooting at a home in Plano in North Texas, local authorities say.

The shooting happened on Sunday about 8.05pm local time in the city, about 30 kilometres north-east of Dallas.

Witnesses told local news channel the incident unfolded at a Dallas Cowboys football game viewing party.

Crystal Sugg, who works at a nearby nursing home, said she heard an argument between a man and a woman.
"Next thing we heard was multiple rounds just going off," Ms Sugg said.

"The argument was what brought me outside... you could hear it getting really, really loud.

"When people started coming outside, that's when he left off the rounds."

Plano police spokesman David Tilley says officers initially responded to a report of shots fired.
When the first officer arrived and went inside the home, the officer confronted the suspected shooter.

Mr Tilley says the officer opened fire, killing the suspect.

Two others were injured in the shooting but their conditions have not been released.

The victims and suspect have not yet been identified.

All of those killed and injured are believed to be adults.

More details were not immediately available and an investigation is ongoing.
