Aussies splurge on wine over chocolate

Australians have upped their spending on wine this Easter, choosing to splurge more on booze than chocolates, according to an Australia Post survey.

Wine has topped chocolate as the guilty pleasure of choice this Easter, with Australians upping their spending on booze this year.

A survey of more than 2000 people has revealed an average of $90 per person will be spent on wine, compared to $43 on chocolates this Easter, according to Australia Post.

Online orders of wine were expected to increase to 90,000 bottles this year, compared to roughly 70,000 last year as Australians continued to turn to online shopping in droves.

The research showed almost half of survey respondents turned to the web to avoid crowds, with an average of $85 each spent on other types of gifts such as books, fashion and homewares.

"Easter is a big deal for us as customers look for options outside their busy schedules," said Vinomofo head of marketing Kip McMillan.
