Australia worried about Iran nuclear deal

Australia is deeply concerned about Iran's decision to partially withdraw from a nuclear deal, Foreign Minister Marise Payne says.

Foreign Minister Marise Payne says Australia is "deeply concerned" about Iran's decision to stop complying with parts of a landmark nuclear deal.

The 2015 deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, is centred on Iran limiting its nuclear program in return for relief from economic sanctions.

But a year after the United States pulled out of the deal and reimposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic, the Iranian president has announced plans to suspend some of its own commitments.

Iran has stopped observing limits on building up its stockpiles of low-enriched uranium, and is threatening more action if other signatories to the deal do not cut them some economic slack in the next two months.

Australia is not a signatory to the deal, but is a party to the agreement through its membership of the United Nations.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has said Australia will support the deal as long as Iran remains compliant with its obligations.

"We have made our concerns regarding Iran's destabilising activities well-known," Senator Payne said on Thursday.

"While I note that Iran has said it is not withdrawing from the plan of action, Australia continues to urge Iran to exercise restraint and to comply with its commitments."

Senator Payne said the nuclear non-proliferation objectives of the Iran deal served the best interests of peace, stability and regional security.

"Australia strongly supports these objectives, and encourages parties to the plan to redouble their efforts to honour its provisions," the minister said.
