Japan's prime minister has offered condolences to Australia over the loss of life and injuries in the Bourke Street attack that killed a Japanese man.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull spoke with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe over the phone on Monday night about the attack and the lives lost.
Mr Turnbull offered his condolences to his Japanese counterpart for the death of the 25-year-old Japanese national who was killed when a man drove into crowds in Melbourne on Friday.
The man was one of five people who died, while more than 30 were injured.
Mr Abe expressed his own condolences for the attack and tragic loss of Australian life and injuries.
The Consulate-General of Japan in Melbourne declined to identify the Japanese man because his family have not consented to release details.
But they say they have offered assistance to his family.
When asked if the man's body would stay in Australia or be taken back to Japan, a spokesman said it was a "private issue".
