Tony Abbott has sounded the death knell for Bronwyn Bishop's long parliamentary career following her resignation as Speaker.

"It's likely that her career in the parliament is substantially at an end," the prime minister told Adelaide Radio 5AA on Tuesday ahead of a likely pre-selection contest in Mrs Bishop's safe Liberal seat of Mackellar in northern Sydney.

"That's a high price for someone who has dedicated 30 odd years to very intense public service."
