Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull insists Australia won't be following Germany's move to ban the burqa.

German chancellor Angela Merkel says the face veiling garment worn by some Muslim women in public is "inappropriate" and has called for it to be outlawed wherever legally possible.

"That's not something we'd support or propose," Mr Turnbull told Melbourne radio 3AW on Thursday.
