Busy SA firies find time to celebrate Xmas

South Australia's firefighters remain on the job through the holidays but that doesn't mean they're missing out on Christmas Day lunch.

With temperatures nudging the mid-30s, it's business as usual for South Australia's firefighters on Christmas Day but that doesn't mean they're missing out on a traditional festive lunch.

At stations across the state, firefighters are mucking in to whip up a Christmas feast for their mates, South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service commander Greg Davis says.

"We work so closely we're like a second family, so all of the stations will sit down with their shift mates and have lunch today," he told AAP on Tuesday.

Comm Davis says firefighters at Adelaide headquarters on Wakefield Street have prepared a roast dinner for their fellow officers and it's smelling great.

"We've got the ovens going, we've got roast potatoes, we've got a pork shoulder, crackling and salads," he said.

"There's a beautiful smell going through our station of the roast, it's got the smell of a house you walk past and say 'I'd love to have what they're having'."

Comm Davis says as long as they don't get called out to a job, all the officers will sit together to eat Christmas lunch and celebrate the day.

"It's a grab for the biggest plate usually but there's plenty for everybody," he said.

Comm Davis says despite their festive lunch preparations, firefighters have already responded to numerous alarm calls and grass fires on Christmas Day.

They've also found time to deliver presents to kids at Adelaide's Women's and Children's Hospital, he said.

More than 130 fire staff are on duty at stations and 260 part-time firefighters are on call across South Australia on Christmas Day.
