Federal cabinet has had a comprehensive briefing on the possible impacts of the incoming Donald Trump administration in the US.

Cabinet minister Christopher Pyne told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday all of the ministers whose portfolios have United States connections provided briefings to the meeting in Melbourne on Tuesday.

"We are very much across the Trump team and Joe Hockey as our ambassador was talking to the Trump transition team many, many months ago in anticipation that either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton would win the presidential election. We are well placed in nations around the world," Mr Pyne said.
