In the lead up to the first round of presidential voting in France, centrist candidate François Bayrou hopes to play the role of spoiler.

The devout Catholic with a small-town upbringing may be lagging in the polls, but Bayrou's middle-of-the-road approach has made him a strong favourite among some voters.

But as CNN's Jim Bittermann reports, do his centrist views have a place in a country which is experiencing deep divisions between the right and left in its electorate?
