China bids to become AI leader by 2030

China plans to become a leader in the area of artificial intelligence, or AI, by 2030, the official newspaper People's Daily reports.

China has launched a plan to become a leader in the area of artificial intelligence, or AI, by 2030, the official newspaper People's Daily reports.

The plan, approved by the State Council, says production of AI-related technology should touch $US22 billion ($A28 billion) by 2020, rising to $US60 billion in 2025 and $US147 billion in 2030.

This will place China "at par with leading powers in the technology and its application," the report added.

According to consultancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, the plan could boost the GDP of the world's second largest economy by as much as 26 per cent.
