China has cancelled trade talks with the United States, according to a Wall Street Journal report, after both sides announced new rounds of tariffs this week.

Vice Premier Liu He was planning to travel to Washington next week with a trade delegation, following an invitation from US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

The meeting was intended to discuss how to de-escalate the ongoing trade war between the US and China, which began in July.

The pair have slapped tit-for-tat tariffs on $50 billion ($A68 billion) worth of goods since the trade war kicked off.

However, the Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources on Friday, said Beijing changed its mind about sending Liu after US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced a new round of tariffs on $US200 million ($A274 million) of Chinese goods.

Beijing subsequently followed suit by announcing tariffs on $60 billion ($A82 billion) worth of American goods.
