Cutting cops ribbing from Heat skipper

Ben Cutting has almost inspired a Brisbane Heat win with the bat but copped stick for being a fast bowler in their Big Bash League loss to Hobart.

He copped stick for being a fast bowler but Ben Cutting reminded many of his all-round talents after almost inspiring a much-needed Big Bash League win for Brisbane Heat.

Cutting thrashed 58 off 32 balls, including five sixes, to give Brisbane a sniff before they fell to a 15-run loss to the Hobart Hurricanes on the Gold Coast.

He also had a tidy 0-27 off four overs and took two impressive outfield catches as man-of-the-match D'Arcy Short's 67 lifted Hobart to 6-159.

But it was his hilarious exchange with captain Chris Lynn with ball in hand that had most tongues wagging after Brisbane slumped to a 0-2 season start.

Cutting forgot that the match had been reduced to 19 overs a side because of rain as he discussed his bowling plans.

Miked up for the Fox Sports TV coverage, Lynn lost his cool with a confused Cutting about how many overs were left after throwing the ex-Australian limited-overs quick the ball.

"Mate, it's a 19-over game," Lynn was heard saying.

As an exasperated Lynn walked away, he began discussing Cutting's gaffe with Fox TV commentators.

"Can you see what I am dealing with? Jeez, fast bowlers," Lynn said.

Cutting later admitted he wasn't the only one scratching his head in the field after the 15-minute rain delay also cut each innings' traditional six-over power play fielding restrictions to five at Metricon Stadium.

"I didn't hear what he said (to Fox Sports commentators). I probably don't want to know, to be honest," Cutting laughed when told about Lynn's chip.

"But a lot of the boys didn't even know we had a five over power play."

Brisbane's current BBL plight is no laughing matter to Cutting, however.

The Heat have to stew until their next game against Sydney Sixers - again on the Gold Coast - on January 1 as they sweat on breaking their season duck.

Cutting reckoned there was one area that had to improve if they were to enter the winners' circle: their batting.

The Heat's much vaunted line-up also boasting Lynn, Kiwi superstar Brendon McCullum and ex-Test opener Joe Burns again failed to fire, slumping to 4-56 before being bowled out for 144 with two balls left.

Cutting admitted ex-Test batsmen Matt Renshaw and Marnus Labuschagne plus Alex Ross would be in the mix against the Sixers.

The Heat will welcome back ex-Test quick James Pattinson against the Sixers after he skipped the Hobart clash for a mate's wedding.
