Defence investigating vile Facebook page

Defence has vowed to take action against personnel who were part of a now-deleted Facebook page that was sharing vile rape and domestic violence material.

The Defence department has vowed to weed out and punish military personnel who were sharing vile rape and domestic violence material as part of a now-defunct Facebook page.

The Victims of Abuse in the Australian Defence Force Association analysed eight per cent of the 30,000 likes of the Facebook site SNAFU - Situation Normal All F****d Up - and identified 100 serving Australian defence personnel.

Some of the material shared on the site carried misogynistic messages or cartoons and memes promoting child sex abuse.

Association secretary Jennifer Jacomb alerted Veterans Affairs Minister Dan Tehan to the site in July.

The page was shut down on Tuesday after AAP reported the story the day before.

Vice Chief of the Defence Force Ray Griggs told a Senate estimates hearing in Canberra the Defence department had asked Facebook to take it down on three occasions.

"It's an awful page," he said.

"We have a separate investigation running within the department to see if we can identify any serving members who... may have been involved in unacceptable behaviour in relation to this page."

He said the investigation would run its course and disciplinary action would be taken as required.

The deletion of the page would not affect the investigation, Vice Admiral Griggs said.

He said there was a zero tolerance to unacceptable behaviour but regrettably that didn't equal zero incidents.

National domestic violence helpline: 1800 737 732 or 1800RESPECT. In an emergency call triple-zero.
