The major political parties have reached an agreement to ban election campaign ads on Good Friday and Anzac Day.

The federal government won't run election campaign advertisements on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Anzac Day.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he understands Labor has agreed to the suspension on Good Friday and Anzac Day, but will still advertise on Easter Sunday.

"I would ask them to extend that to Easter Sunday - that is sort of the whole point of the Christian Easter celebration," he told reporters in the Tasmanian town of Ulverstone on Tuesday.

9News is reporting Opposition Leader Bill Shorten contacted the PM, requesting a ban on ads on 19 and 25 April.

“This is about respecting the sacrifice of our Anzacs. And it’s about respecting the significance of Good Friday to so many Australians of faith,” Mr Shorten reportedly wrote to Mr Morison.
