The top line: Sydney is expected to get a week of heavy rainfall, while severe weather warnings have been issued for parts of the NSW coast.

The bigger picture: Sydney residents can expect to be drenched by up to 100mm of rain by the week's end, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

It follows a 96mm downpour over the last 24 hours across the state.

The stretch of rain is the result of a "blocking high" pressure system which disrupts the normal flow of weather and causes it to remain stationary for an extended period.

The NSW State Emergency Service has warned residents north of Sydney, from Gosford to Forster to anticipate severe weather and monitor conditions.

Flash flooding is possible due to the persistent rainfall forecast for Bateau Bay, Corlette, Gorokan, Kanwal, Salamander Bay, and Tuggerawong.

What else to know: Wild weather battered NSW last month, with Penrith in western Sydney recording .

What happens next: Residents are urged to stay across any weather updates on the NSW SES website.
