A federal Liberal MP has apologised for an Anzac Day tweet promoting his party's position on negative gearing.

Former veterans' affairs minister Stuart Robert was heavily criticised on social media for linking negative gearing policy to military personnel.

"There are more defence force personnel who use negative gearing than surgeons, judges, anaesthetists and psychiatrists combined," the tweet, which has since been deleted, read.

Other Twitter users accused the Queensland MP of using Anzac Day to further a political agenda, and for not having any evidence to back up his claim.

The backlash prompted an apology about three hours later.

Mr Robert said he had meant to post the tweet yesterday, not on Anzac Day.
