Melbourne Renegades captain Aaron Finch has backed dumped BBL teammate Cameron White, saying his experience will be crucial.
White made way for Finch, himself axed from the Test team, in Monday night's upset win over the Hobart Hurricanes at Marvel Stadium.
Finch top-scored with 42 as the Renegades won by six wickets and stayed in the top-four hunt with a 3-3 record.
It was Hobart's first loss of the BBL season after a 5-0 start.
Finch said coach Andrew McDonald had a tough conversation with White at training, to tell him he was out of the side.
"It's definitely not the end for Cam ... experience wins you tournaments," Finch said.
"Cam has been a huge part of this team and this club for a few years now and he will get another chance, no doubt."
Experience was key for the Renegades when they were chasing Hobart's 5-145.
The game was in the balance for Melbourne at 4-117, before Dan Christian and Mohammad Nabi came together and ensured the win.
"That's the importance of having experience, particularly down that middle to late order," Finch said.
"You can rely on them to navigate through a situation.
"At times, youngsters can be great at the top of the order because they have that carefree attitude - they go out and express themselves.
"But sometimes you just need a little bit of experience, you need someone who's been there and done it before to not panic when a (required) run rate gets to eight, nine, 10."
Hobart's total was about 20 runs too few and they were in early strife at 3-11.
D'Arcy Short was the third of those dismissals, in strange circumstances.
A short ball from Usman Shinwari hit him on the glove and the bowler ran down the wicket to take the catch.
The umpire initially shook his head for not out, before raising his finger as Short walked.
"The umpire didn't give it out, but D'Arcy walked and then he gave it," said teammate Ben McDermott.
"I think the umpire thought it brushed his arm and hit his helmet, maybe - but, straight off his glove."
Monday night was a brief BBL cameo for Finch, before he captains the Australian one-day team against India.
