New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian joined the local community at the Lakemba Mosque to mark the end of Ramadan.

Ms Berejiklian was invited to join the local community to mark the end of the holy month, which represents a time for reflection, prayer and renewal for Muslims.

"With the deepest sense of pride and humility, I am deeply grateful for the invitation to part of such a beautiful morning of celebration," she said.
"As the premier of New South Wales I am incredibly proud of all the Muslim communities throughout our state and I want to personally thank you for your special generosity and sense of sacrifice during the month of Ramadan.

'During your sacrifice, your generosity and deep compassion, you have demonstrated to all of us what it means to treat each other with respect and dignity."

Ms Berejiklian tweeted her experience on Friday morning, sharing photos of the celebration.

More than a billion people around the world are observing Ramadan by fasting during daylight hours for the month.

For the ninth month of the Muslim lunar calendar (May 16 to June 15 in 2018) Muslims abstain from eating and drinking and increase prayer and charity.

The holy month is a time of spiritual reflection, and fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam.
