Hanger to head insulation compo push

Royal commissioner Ian Hanger QC has been appointed to assist with mediation and settlement of home insulation scheme compensation.

The lawyer who headed the royal commission into the botched Labor home insulation scheme has been given a new role - helping victims get compensation.

Barrister Ian Hanger will assist with mediation and settlement of compensation for the families and small businesses affected by the scheme.

Environment Minister Greg Hunt said Mr Hanger's appointment would provide continuity for the families of the four men who died under the scheme.

"Mr Hanger's understanding of the ongoing distress and anguish facing the families means he is uniquely placed to assist in the speedy provision of compensation," Mr Hunt said.

"His understanding of the hardship faced by affected insulation businesses means that all concerned can have confidence that the process will be approached as he recommended."

The government's full response to the royal commission will be released by the end of the year.

The inquiry found the deaths of all four insulation installers were avoidable.

About 120 companies lost an estimated $200 million when the scheme was abolished.
