The Hobart Hurricanes have ended a forgettable WBBL campaign on a high, with a thrilling two-run win over the Melbourne Stars at the MCG.

After starring with the bat and top-scoring with 44 in the Hurricanes' 6-130 on Sunday, West Indies import Hayley Matthews held her nerve with the ball in a tense chase by the Stars, with Melbourne captain Kristen Beams needing four to win off the last ball.

Matthews fired it into the block hole and Beams could scramble only a single after miscuing a cross-batted hoick, giving the last-placed Hurricanes their second success of the season.

The Stars did well to get to 7-128 after looking gone when Erin Osborne departed for a well-made 30 in the 17th before some clean hitting from Makinley Blows gave the home side a fighting chance late.

Osborne also bowled beautifully earlier, taking 3-23, but the seventh-placed Stars shot themselves repeatedly in the foot with shoddy fielding, including six dropped catches.

Matthews was named player of the match and Georgia Redmayne (40) also impressed at the top of the order.
