Brian Loughnane often gets asked if he misses the cut and thrust of federal politics.

But the former Liberal Party federal director of more than 12 years thinks he had his "fair go" in Canberra.

Mr Loughnane was on Friday appointed an Officer (AO) of the Order of Australia, for distinguished service to parliament and politics through contributions to public policy.

He was deeply honoured and believes it also recognises the wonderful party team he worked with for so many years.

"It's a tribute to my family and friends who did so much to support me during my time as federal director," Mr Loughnane, who is married to former prime minister Tony Abbott's former chief of staff Peta Credlin, told AAP.

He announced he was standing down in October 2015 after directing four federal election campaigns and - in his own words at the time - having two wins, one loss and a draw.

"I learnt a lot, particularly from (former prime minister) John Howard and I felt it was a great privilege to have the opportunity to work at such a critical apex of our political system," Mr Loughnane said in reflection.

Not only does he recognise the work of his team in winning the 2004 election against Mark Latham, and getting Mr Abbott into office in 2013, but also in helping to stabilise the coalition after Kevin Rudd's 2007 win.

Asked whether he misses the Canberra political bubble, he insists he was very fortunate to be in politics at a senior level for almost 15 years.

"I get asked often do I miss it, but I had a very good run," he said.
