Jacinda Arden has become the first New Zealand prime minister to take part in her country's Secret Santa.

The New Zealand Post initiative, which involves an exchange of gifts by strangers via mail, has been running for seven years.

Recipients are encouraged to show their gifts on social media using the hashtag #NZsecretsanta.

Ms Arden posted some body cream, an Apec pin, a book and a pin to one lucky recipient while she received a homemade Christmas tree ornament in return.

She posted a video on Twitter on Tuesday while pondering what was beneath the wrapping of her gift, before she unwrapped the ornament.

She posted that her allotted Secret Santa "didn't quite get there this year," before thanking the sender.

The gift Ms Arden posted out arrived at its destination on Wednesday, with her recipient Rebecca Terry posting her own excitement in receiving the gift.

She later thanked Ms Ardern for the present, saying she loved it all.

MS Ardern continued with the pleasantries in a reply to Ms Terry.

People across New Zealand posted their presents on Twitter - here are some of the best gifts.
