He was a last-minute pick up but Big Bash League import Jofra Archer could prove the wildcard in Hobart Hurricanes' push for their first finals berth in four seasons.

The 22-year-old Barbados native showed nerves of steel bowling the final over in his side's nail-biting seven-run win over the previously undefeated Adelaide Strikers.

Archer only linked with the squad in December after Hobart officials scrambled to find a replacement for overseas seamer Tom Curran, who was called up to join England's Ashes squad.

On Thursday night he produced several big plays in the Bellerive Oval thriller to take his season wicket tally to eight.

Adelaide needed 13 runs off the last six balls but Archer conceded just five as the Hurricanes registered back-to-back wins.

They're now within two competition points of the fourth-placed Brisbane Heat with a game in hand.

"I was a little nervous on the inside," Archer, who finished with 3-15, said of the final over.

"Sometimes the batting side can prey on that. That's why you always try to look confident on the outside, even if you aren't."

Archer removed the dangerous Alex Carey in the second over of the Strikers' chase and broke a 102-run stand between Travis Head and Colin Ingram which had put the visitors back in the game.

The allrounder had Head skying a delivery to mid-off and then combined in the outfield with D'Arcy Short to get rid of Ingram.

Archer, who has impressed for Sussex in the English county competition, used every bit of his height to catch Ingram's pull shot on the boundary before lobbing it infield to Short.

Short earlier rocketed to the top of the BBL run-scoring tally with 96 from 58.

It's the second time in two matches he's fallen agonisingly shy of a maiden T20 ton after a 97 against Sydney Thunder on New Year's Day

"That was some of the best hitting I've seen," Archer said.

"Hopefully next game he can get the three figures."
