France's interior minister will order 24-hour security for Israeli Olympians at the Paris Games amid heightened geopolitical tensions.

The background: The Paris Olympics are set against a backdrop of global conflicts, with the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, raising security concerns.

The French government said it is determined to ensure the safety of all athletes, especially the Israeli delegation, following remarks from a far-left French politician.

The key quote: "I want to say that on behalf of France, to the Israeli delegation, we welcome you to France for these Olympic Games." — French foreign minister Stéphane Séjourné.
What else to know: Far-left French politician Thomas Portes sparked controversy by stating Israeli athletes were unwelcome and calling for protests against them.

French interior minister Gérald Darmanin said in a TV interview that Israeli athletes would be protected around the clock during the Games, 52 years after the Munich Olympics massacre in which 11 Israelis were killed by Palestinian militants.

What happens next: The French government will continue to coordinate with Israeli officials to ensure robust security measures during the Olympics.

The opening ceremony will feature a parade of athletes on the Seine River, amidst tight security protocols to safeguard all participants.
