Key federal independent Tony Windsor could be in for a tough fight next election with colourful Nationals Senator Barnaby Joyce indicating he might take a run for his lower house seat.

Senator Joyce has told the Nine Network he'd be foolish not to take up the offer from his colleagues to move from Queensland and take a shot at Mr Windsor's Tamworth electorate in New South Wales.

Although Mr Windsor has a healthy 21.5 per cent margin, he's expected to face a voter backlash after last year's political deal that helped Prime Minister Julia Gillard form a Labor minority government.
