The Senate President has received the formal resignation of Labor senator Sam Dastyari.

Labor senator Sam Dastyari has formally resigned from parliament after a scandal over his ties to a Chinese donor.

Senate President Scott Ryan confirmed the resignation on Thursday.

The NSW seat is expected to be filled by former premier Kristina Keneally after an internal Labor selection process.
