Calls by rogue senator Jacqui Lambie for defence force pay to be linked to politicians' salaries could gain the support of an alternative Senate voting bloc.
The Palmer United Party senator released a first draft of her bill on Friday, backing up her demands to overturn a lower-than-inflation pay increase for military personnel.
And while her idea took crossbench senator David Leyonhjelm by surprise, he told AAP he did not think there was anything wrong with the proposal.
However, Senator Leyonhjelm played down reports he and Family First senator Bob Day were looking to form a new balance-of-power alliance with Senator Lambie.
"It would require some negotiation because we are somewhat apart on many policy areas," he said.
"But I'm sure we could find common ground on some issues."
Those discussions have looked more likely to happen in recent days.
Senator Lambie has fallen out with PUP leader Clive Palmer over her promise to oppose outright all Abbott government legislation until it promises to pay the military more.
Mr Palmer labelled her a "drama queen" and dared her to challenge him for the leadership if she was truly unhappy with the party's direction.
The dogfight came to a head on Thursday when Mr Palmer expelled her chief of staff, Rob Messenger, from the PUP.
But Senator Lambie is standing by her right-hand man, and he has no plans on leaving, either.
"Yes, I do intend to stay on," Mr Messenger said.
