As teammate Tim Simona gets set to front the NRL, Wests Tigers skipper Aaron Woods says a life ban is too harsh for anyone found guilty of gambling offences.
Woods was at pains not to comment on Simona's case on Monday, given it is before the NRL integrity unit.
But he did make a general observation about betting-related penalties - comparing them to those for use of performance-enhancing drugs.
Tigers centre Simona is this week expected to learn his fate after being issued with a notice to cancel his registration over allegations he bet on several matches last year.
Simona is reportedly accused of laying small bets on players he was marking to score and faces a potential lifetime ban.
However Woods said he believed in second chances and players being allowed to atone for their mistakes.
"A life ban is a long time," Woods said.
"People who test (positive) for steroids, they get two or four years.
"If they do something wrong, you've got to have a chance to come back from it.
"But in saying that I don't know the full details of Tim Simona. That's all with the NRL, it's hard to comment on."
NRL boss Todd Greenberg has said he will come down hard on anyone found betting on opposition teams.
He said on Sunday he and integrity unit chief Nick Weeks visited all 16 clubs and reinforced to every player that they weren't allowed to bet on matches.
He also advised them to delete any betting app off their phone to eliminate any risk of them mistakenly committing a gambling offence.
